Mushroom growing splits into two paths, and the gear you need depends entirely on which one you're on. Buy a ready-to-fruit block and you're misting a bag on a countertop in a week. Start from spore or culture and you're into agar, sterilized grain, pressure cooking and bulk substrate — more control, more yield, and a genuine learning curve. Everything below is organised along that path, from the easiest entry point to full lab and commercial scale.

Every step you skip costs money per grow and saves you equipment up front. Most growers start at step 4 and work backwards as volume justifies it.

- Ready for a real grow — an all-in-one bag: grain and substrate in one sterile bag with an injection port.
- Scaling up — grain spawn into bulk substrate in a monotub. Best yield per dollar.
- Working from culture — agar and lab supplies plus a pressure sterilizer. Non-negotiable for grain.

Long stems and small caps mean one thing almost every time: not enough fresh air exchange. CO2 is what tells a mushroom to stretch looking for open air.
What to skip
- Sterilizing grain in a regular stockpot. Grain needs 15 PSI for 90-120 minutes; boiling water cannot get there and the grain will contaminate.
- A flow hood as a first purchase. A still air box does everything a hobbyist needs for a fraction of the cost.
- Fruiting in a sealed container. Without fresh air exchange you get stems, not mushrooms.

Do I need a pressure cooker to grow mushrooms?

Why are my mushrooms growing long and thin?
Insufficient fresh air exchange. High CO2 makes fruit bodies stretch. Increase air exchange and keep humidity up while you do it.
Sterilize or pasteurize?
Grain must be sterilized - 15 PSI, 90-120 minutes. Bulk substrate can be pasteurized at 150-160°F for 1-2 hours, because the spawn you add is already colonised and can outcompete survivors.
