Mushroom Grow Kits - Ready to Fruit
A ready-to-fruit kit is a block of substrate that is already fully colonised with mycelium. All the hard work - sterilizing, inoculating, waiting three weeks for colonisation - is done. You cut the bag, mist it twice a day, and you are harvesting in seven to fourteen days. It is the only way to grow mushrooms with no equipment at all, and it is how nearly every serious grower started.
How to choose a grow kit
- Species sets the difficulty. Oysters are the most forgiving and the fastest. Lion's mane is nearly as easy and far more interesting to eat.
- Block size drives yield. A 5 lb block typically gives 1-2 lbs of mushrooms across two or three flushes. A 6.5 lb block gives proportionally more.
- Check the fruiting temperature against the room you will actually keep it in. Pink oysters want it warm; blue oysters tolerate cool.
- Multi-packs stagger nicely - start them a week apart rather than all at once, or you will harvest more than you can eat.
Species guide
| Species | Fruiting temp | Difficulty | Flavour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue oyster | 55-70°F | Easiest | Mild, savoury, meaty |
| Pink oyster | 70-85°F | Easy, very fast | Strong, bacon-like when crisped |
| Gold / yellow oyster | 65-80°F | Easy | Nutty, delicate |
| Lion's mane | 60-70°F | Easy | Crab or lobster-like |
Getting the most from a block
- Cut an X in the bag face, or cut the top open depending on the kit's instructions.
- Mist the exposed face 2-3 times a day. It should look damp, never sodden.
- Keep it out of direct sun. Indirect light is enough - mushrooms use light as a direction cue, not for energy.
- Harvest just before the caps flatten and the edges start to turn up.
- After the first flush, soak the block in cool water for several hours, drain, and wait. A second and often third flush follows.
What to skip
- Misting into the cut so water pools inside the bag. Standing water rots the block.
- Waiting for the mushrooms to get bigger. Yield gain is small and spore drop starts, which makes a mess and shortens shelf life.
- Kits with no species named on the label. Species determines the temperature you need to hit.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a mushroom grow kit take?
Typically 7-14 days from cutting the bag to first harvest, then another 1-2 weeks per additional flush.
How many times can you harvest from a grow kit?
Two to three flushes is normal, with the first flush being the largest by some margin. Soak the block between flushes to rehydrate it.
What is the easiest mushroom to grow?
Blue or pink oyster. They colonise aggressively, tolerate a wide temperature range, and fruit fast enough to be forgiving of mistakes.
Do grow kits need light?
Indirect ambient light only. Mushrooms do not photosynthesize - they use light to orient the fruit body. A normally lit room is fine, direct sun is not.
