Agar is where you get control. Working on plates lets you isolate a clean culture from a contaminated one, select the fastest-growing genetics from a spore print, and keep a strain alive indefinitely instead of buying a new syringe every grow. It is the step that separates people who grow mushrooms from people who culture them - and the equipment cost is genuinely small.

What you need to work with agar

  • Agar medium - pre-mixed powders are simplest. MEA (malt extract agar) is the general-purpose standard; PDA (potato dextrose agar) is close behind.
  • A still air box. A clear tote with arm holes. It works by removing air currents rather than filtering them, and for plate work and grain inoculation it is genuinely sufficient.
  • Scalpel and flame. Sterilize the blade, cut a wedge of clean mycelium, transfer to a fresh plate.
  • Pressure sterilizer to sterilize the medium before pouring - or buy pre-poured sterile plates and skip it.
  • Liquid culture - a sterile sugar solution you grow mycelium in, then inject into grain. Faster colonisation than spores because it is already mycelium.

That last column is the argument for agar. On a plate, contamination is visible before it reaches your grain. In a syringe it is not.

What to skip

  • Buying a flow hood first. A still air box costs a fraction and handles everything up to commercial volume.
  • Pouring plates in open room air. Even mild air currents carry contaminant spores directly onto the medium.
  • Working from spore syringes indefinitely. If you like a strain, get it onto agar and keep it.

Do I need a still air box or a flow hood?
