How to Hydroseed Your Lawn: Step-by-Step Guide
Hydroseeding is one of the most efficient ways to establish a new lawn — but success depends on proper preparation and follow-through. Follow these steps and you'll have a lush, green lawn in as little as 5–7 weeks.
What You'll Need
Before you begin, gather your supplies:
- ICT Organics 1-2-3 Hydro-Seed (1 Gallon) — your all-in-one hydroseeding solution
- Grass seed appropriate for your region (bermudagrass for warm climates, fescue or ryegrass for cool climates)
- A broadcast spreader for pre-seeding soil amendments
- Compost or organic matter for soil enrichment
- Garden hose or irrigation system
- Rototiller or rake
Step 1: Test and Prepare Your Soil
Healthy grass starts with healthy soil. Before anything else:
- Test your soil pH (ideal range: 6.0–7.0)
- Remove rocks, debris, and existing weeds
- Till the top 4–6 inches of soil
- Incorporate compost to improve drainage and nutrient content
- Grade the area so water drains away from structures
Step 2: Apply a Starter Fertilizer
Apply a starter fertilizer or organic amendment using a broadcast spreader. This gives your seedlings the nutrients they need right from germination.
Step 3: Mix Your Hydroseed Slurry
Follow the instructions on ICT Organics 1-2-3 Hydro-Seed to mix your slurry. Combine:
- Water
- ICT Organics 1-2-3 Hydro-Seed
- Your chosen grass seed
Mix thoroughly until you have a uniform, pourable consistency.
Step 4: Apply the Slurry
Spray or pour the slurry evenly across your prepared soil. Work in overlapping passes to ensure full coverage. For large areas, use a tow-behind spreader to distribute dry amendments beforehand.
Step 5: Keep It Moist
This is the most critical step. For the first 2–3 weeks:
- Water lightly 2–3 times per day
- Never let the surface dry out completely
- Avoid heavy watering that causes runoff
Step 6: First Mow
Once grass reaches 3–4 inches tall (typically 4–6 weeks after application), mow for the first time. Set your mower to the highest setting and never remove more than ⅓ of the blade height.
Step 7: Ongoing Care
After establishment:
- Reduce watering to deep, infrequent sessions (1–1.5 inches/week)
- Apply a maintenance fertilizer at 6–8 weeks
- Overseed any thin spots as needed
