Hinnonmaki Red is a compact gooseberry with small thorns and red fruit that balances sweetness and tartness when ripe. The berries can be eaten fresh or used in preserves, pies, sauces, and other cooked recipes.

  • Botanical name: Ribes uva-crispa 'Hinnonmaki Red'
  • Plant form: Potted gooseberry plant
  • USDA zones: 4–9 where winter chill is met and summer heat is not extreme
  • Chill requirement: Approximately 800–1,200 hours
  • Pollination: Self-fruitful
  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade; provide afternoon shade in hot-summer areas
  • Mature size: Approximately 3–4 feet tall and wide; size varies with site and pruning
  • Harvest: Typically mid- to late summer, depending on climate

Planting and care

Plant in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and keep the root zone evenly moist. Prune during dormancy to improve light and air circulation. Monitor foliage for powdery mildew and other local disease pressure rather than relying on a resistance claim.

Regional note: Some states or counties regulate Ribes because of white pine blister rust. Check local rules before planting, especially near five-needle pines.
