Carnivorous Plants: Venus Flytraps, Pitcher Plants and Sundews
If you're buying your first carnivorous plant, start with a sundew or a Sarracenia pitcher plant. They forgive mistakes that kill a Venus flytrap. Every carnivorous plant here shares one rule: water it with distilled water, rainwater or reverse osmosis water, never tap. Minerals in tap water build up in the low-nutrient soil these plants evolved in, and the roots burn out over a few months. Get the water right and most of these are easy.

How to choose a carnivorous plant
- Indoors on a windowsill: sundews (Drosera capensis, D. spatulata) and butterworts (Pinguicula) handle household humidity and don't need a winter rest.
- Outdoors or a sunny porch: Venus flytraps and Sarracenia want 6+ hours of direct sun and a cold winter dormancy. They're bog plants from the Carolinas, not tropical ones.
- Hanging baskets and high humidity: Nepenthes (tropical pitcher plants) climb and hang. Highland types like cool nights; lowland types want warmth all year.
- Live plant vs seed: seed is cheap but slow. Flytraps take 3 to 5 years from seed to adult size, so buy a live plant if you want traps this season.
Care at a glance
| Plant | Light | Winter dormancy | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sundew (Drosera) | Bright window or grow light | Most tropical types: no | Easy |
| Butterwort (Pinguicula) | Bright indirect | Mexican types: dry rest, no cold | Easy |
| Pitcher plant (Sarracenia) | Full sun, 6+ hours | Yes, 3 to 4 months near 35 to 50°F | Easy outdoors |
| Venus flytrap (Dionaea) | Full sun, 6+ hours | Yes, 3 to 4 months near 35 to 50°F | Moderate |
| Tropical pitcher (Nepenthes) | Bright indirect | No | Moderate |
What to skip
- Fertilizer and regular potting soil. Use sphagnum peat with perlite or silica sand, and let the plant feed itself on insects.
- Triggering flytrap traps for fun. Each trap only closes a handful of times before it dies, and every closing costs the plant energy.
- Skipping dormancy for flytraps and Sarracenia. Plants kept warm all winter usually decline and die in their second year.
FAQ
What water should I use for carnivorous plants?
Distilled, rain or reverse osmosis water under about 50 ppm total dissolved solids. A cheap TDS meter tells you whether your water qualifies.
Can a Venus flytrap live indoors?
Only under a strong grow light. A windowsill rarely gives it enough direct sun, and it still needs a cool winter rest.
Do I have to feed my carnivorous plant?
Outdoors, no. It'll catch plenty. Indoors, a live or rehydrated insect every few weeks during the growing season is plenty.
What's the easiest carnivorous plant for beginners?
Drosera capensis, the Cape sundew. It grows fast, flowers indoors and tolerates a missed watering.
