Carnivorous Plant Seeds
Growing carnivorous plants from seed is cheap and rewarding, but it's slow. Sundews reach catching size in months, while Venus flytraps and Sarracenia take 3 to 5 years to mature. Seed is also the only way to grow some rare crosses. Most temperate species need cold stratification before they'll sprout, so check that before you sow.
How to choose carnivorous plant seeds
- Fastest results: sundew seed, especially Drosera capensis, sprouts in 2 to 4 weeks and catches bugs within months.
- Long-term projects: Venus flytrap and Sarracenia seed. Hybrid Sarracenia seed gives unique plants, each one different.
- Stratification: Sarracenia and temperate sundews need 4 to 8 weeks of cold first. Flytrap seed doesn't, though it's best sown fresh.

| Water | Distilled, rain or RO only |
| Light | Bright, under an LED or in a bright window |
| Humidity | Clear lid or bag until seedlings have true leaves |
| Germination | 2 to 6 weeks for most species |
| Time to mature | Sundews months; flytraps and Sarracenia 3 to 5 years |
How to sow carnivorous plant seeds
- Stratify Sarracenia and temperate sundew seed first: put it on damp paper towel in a sealed bag in the fridge for 4 to 8 weeks.
- Fill a small pot or tray with damp peat moss, wetted with distilled water.
- Sprinkle the seed on the surface. Don't cover it. Most carnivorous seed needs light to germinate.
- Cover with a clear lid or bag and stand the pot in a tray of distilled water.
- Give it bright light under an LED, about 14 hours a day, at 70 to 80°F.
- Open the lid gradually once seedlings have several true leaves, and transplant after the first year.
Common problems
- Nothing sprouting: Sarracenia and temperate seed usually needs stratification. Old seed also loses viability fast.
- Mold on the surface: Too little airflow. Crack the lid for a few hours a day.
- Seedlings stretching: Not enough light. Lower the light closer to the tray.
FAQ
How long do Venus flytraps take from seed?
About 3 to 5 years to reach adult size. Seedlings make tiny working traps in their first year.
Do I need to stratify Venus flytrap seed?
No. Flytrap seed germinates without cold, though fresh seed gives the best results.
Can I store carnivorous plant seed?
Most seed keeps in the fridge in a sealed bag for a year or so. Germination drops after that.
Will hybrid seed look like the parent?
No. Seed from a hybrid gives a mix of new plants, each one a little different.
